Planning a trip to Santa Barbara, California? You are in for a seriously good time!

This charming coastal city might be compact, but don’t let its size fool you—there’s a lot to see and do here. From Spanish colonial architecture and standout restaurants to beautiful beaches, Santa Barbara packs a surprising amount into a small area, so it can be hard to know what’s worth your time.

That’s exactly why we created this 2-day itinerary, to help you experience the best of it without feeling rushed. With everything close together, it’s easy to make the most of your time and hit all the highlights at a relaxed pace.

Ready to see what this incredible city in Southern California has to offer? Let’s go!

Don’t Miss Out On Our Top Choice!

The tour we loved the most and suggest booking ASAP is this one!

Our personal FAVORITE thing we did was this electric bike tour! We cruised from downtown to the coastline, zipped through the Funk Zone, and stopped at all the best viewpoints without breaking a sweat or worrying about parking.

Check out the 560+ 5-star reviews and book this tour here!

Itinerary Overview

You’ll also have some great food!

Santa Barbara is absolutely perfect for a short trip because everything is so close together. You don’t have to spend hours getting from one place to another, which means you can actually enjoy your time there instead of rushing around. We designed this 2-day itinerary with that in mind, because we want your days to feel full but not overwhelming!

On day one, you’ll stick mostly to downtown. It’s all very walkable, so you can really take your time soaking up the atmosphere. In the afternoon, you’ve got a choice: kayaking or electric bikes. From there, ease into the evening with a stroll along Stearns Wharf, followed by dinner and drinks in the Funk Zone.

Day two lets you pick your vibe. If you’re in the mood for something slower, you can spend the day in Santa Barbara’s beautiful wine country. If you’re craving a bit more excitement and have access to a car, there’s also a zipline experience just outside the city. Either way, you’ll wrap things up with some incredible tacos and one last evening around State Street.

If you’re worried about getting around, don’t be. Most of these activities (except for ziplining) can easily be done on foot. And for anything a little farther out, a quick Uber or taxi ride will do the trick!

Ready to see how it all comes together? Here’s the plan:

Day 1: Start with a classic American breakfast downtown, explore the city’s most beautiful streets and landmarks on foot, then choose between a private kayak tour of the coastline or an electric bike ride around the city before a sunset stroll and dinner on Stearns Wharf.

Day 2: Kick things off with a waterfront breakfast before choosing between a full-day wine tour through Santa Barbara’s vineyards or a thrilling zipline adventure over the Santa Ynez Valley. Regroup with a casual lunch at the Public Market, enjoy a final wander through downtown, and close out the trip with a sunset taco tour before a relaxed evening on State Street.

Day 1

Breakfast – Joe’s Cafe

Breakfast time!

For your very first morning in Santa Barbara, we’re sending you straight to Joe’s Cafe. This downtown institution has been serving up hearty breakfasts for decades, and it’s exactly the kind of place that sets the right tone for a full day of exploring Santa Barbara.

The menu is everything you’d want from an American breakfast spot, so expect pancakes, eggs Benedict, waffles, eggs and bacon, the works. We went with the eggs Benedict, and it was absolutely divine.

We also picked this spot because it’s right in the middle of downtown, so you can walk straight out of breakfast and into the first activity without needing to jump in a taxi or plan a route. It opens at 7:30 am, which is perfect timing if you want to get a head start on the day (coffee in hand, of course).

Morning – Explore downtown Santa Barbara

Once you’re all finished up with breakfast (around 9 or 10 am, depending on how early you arrived), you’ve got a couple of hours to explore downtown before heading over to your early afternoon tour.

This is actually one of our favorite parts of the whole itinerary, because Santa Barbara’s downtown is genuinely beautiful! You probably won’t be able to fit all of the following recommendations in, so feel free to pick and choose the stops that catch your eye:

  • Stroll along State Street This is the heart of downtown, lined with shops, cafes, palm trees, and gorgeous Spanish-style architecture, making it a fabulous first introduction to the city.
  • Browse the boutiques and local stores There is a great mix of fashion, homeware, gift shops, and independent businesses along State Street. We especially loved Kariella, a fun clothing boutique, and Moon River, a wonderfully eclectic gift shop that’s worth poking your head into.
  • Stop by the Santa Barbara County Courthouse This is one of the most beautiful buildings in the city, and even a quick visit is worth it for the architecture, hand-painted tiles, and manicured gardens. You can climb the clock tower for panoramic views over the city or take a free one-hour tour, no reservations required! Check the court website here for opening times
  • Take a look around El Paseo This is one of Santa Barbara’s prettiest historic corners, with white stucco walls, arches, and hidden courtyards that feel very classic Santa Barbara. It’s a lovely spot to wander through and take a few photos before moving on.
  • Grab a coffee There are some excellent cafes dotted around downtown, and we recommend grabbing a coffee and a small bite to eat before your early afternoon tour (since it falls right around the lunchtime slot). Dune Coffee Roasters is one of our favorites, serving great coffee and fresh pastries!

Once you’re good to go, you can hop in an Uber or taxi to the meeting point for your early afternoon tour.

Option 1: Early afternoon – Go kayaking!

We love a day on the water!

So much fun! Photo credit: Cal Coast Adventures

If you’re looking to experience Santa Barbara from a completely different perspective, this kayaking tour is a fantastic choice. We recommend booking the 1 pm start, which finishes up around 2:30–3 pm, leaving you plenty of time for the rest of your day.

You’ll launch right from the harbor and paddle out along the coastline, with views of the Santa Ynez Mountains in the distance. The kayaks are stable and beginner-friendly, so even if you’ve never done this before, it’s very approachable.

Along the way, your guide will point out interesting sights around the marina, share a bit of local history, and help you spot wildlife. Sea lions are often lounging near the docks, and if you’re lucky, you might even see dolphins passing by in the distance. It’s like having front-row seats to a private wildlife show!

The pace is relaxed and adjusted to your comfort level, so it feels more like a scenic coastal adventure than a workout. Whether you go for a private experience or join a small group, it’s an easy and enjoyable way to get out on the water.

With incredible views, close-up wildlife encounters, and a totally different angle of the city, it’s no surprise this tour has so many five-star reviews.

Option 2: Early afternoon – Zip around town on two wheels

We got some great views of the city

If you’d rather stay on land and see more of the city without rushing around, this electric bike tour is such a fun way to do it. Starting at 1 pm and lasting about 2.5 hours, it fits perfectly into your afternoon plans.

This tour is all about covering a lot of ground with minimal effort. You’ll cruise from downtown to the coastline on an easy-to-use e-bike, so there’s no need to worry about hills, traffic, or finding parking along the way.

During the ride, you’ll glide past Santa Barbara’s palm-lined waterfront, explore the colorful Funk Zone filled with murals and trendy spots, and stop at scenic viewpoints for some of the best city and ocean views. It’s a great mix of sightseeing and relaxed exploring without feeling rushed.

Your guide will lead the way and keep things fun with local stories, great recommendations (especially for tacos!), and a flexible route that can shift based on your group’s interests. Some of the best moments come from unexpected stops, like hidden mural alleys packed with color and character.

You can choose between a private experience or a small group tour, but either way, this is one of the easiest and most enjoyable ways to get a well-rounded introduction to Santa Barbara. It’s also one of the highest-rated tours in the area, with HUNDREDS of five-star reviews from travelers who say it was a highlight of their trip.

Late afternoon – Soak up the views at Stearns Wharf

After your tour, make your way over to Stearns Wharf, which sits right at the end of State Street (if you went for the kayak option, it’s right next to the tour meeting point).

Stearns Wharf has been part of the Santa Barbara waterfront since 1872, and it’s actually one of the oldest working wharves on the West Coast. We think it is worth visiting for the setting alone. With the mountains rising up behind you and the ocean stretching out in every direction, it’s easily one of the most scenic spots in the city.

After you’ve stopped to take a few photos, take some time to wander around. You’ll find lots of gift shops, sweet treats, ice cream, wine tasting, casual seafood spots, and even the Sea Center nearby to explore. It’s such an easy place to dip in and out of whatever catches your eye without needing a big plan.

If you can, try to linger into the late afternoon, when the light starts to soften, and the whole waterfront takes on a golden, relaxed feel.

Dinner – Finney’s Crafthouse

Finney's Crafthouse - Santa Barbara in Santa Barbara California (3)

Since we didn’t have a proper lunch today, we recommend heading over for dinner a little on the earlier side.

Finney’s Crafthouse is in a really handy location at 35 State Street, which makes it an easy and natural next stop after time around Stearns Wharf and the waterfront. It stays open daily until 10 pm, so there is no rush, but getting there around 5:30 or 6 pm means you’ll likely beat the busiest part of the evening.

Honestly, Finney’s has such a great first-night energy about it. It’s a family-owned American tavern with a strong local following, and the atmosphere is buzzy and casual without feeling chaotic. We loved settling in here after a full day of walking. And even though it was slightly busy, it was actually so relaxing to just sit and chat!

The menu here is broad, with burgers, sandwiches, salads, starters, and bar-style favorites. We tried the Finney burger and the truffle fries, and both were out of this world! Other popular choices include the smashburger, bison burger, onion ring tower, crispy Brussels sprouts, and buffalo cauliflower. Basically, you can’t go wrong no matter what you choose.

Evening – Unwind in the Funk Zone

After dinner, the Funk Zone (yes, the Funk Zone) is just a 5-minute walk away, and it’s every bit as cool as it sounds!

Basically, it’s an entertainment district packed with cocktail bars, craft breweries, wine tasting rooms, and live music venues, all tucked into a compact, walkable neighborhood just off the waterfront. We absolutely loved the vibe here because it feels genuinely local rather than touristy.

A few of our top picks are Validation Ale if you love craft beer (like us!) and Pearl Social Cocktail Club for cocktails, live music, and DJs on most evenings.

If neither of these jump out at you, just go for a wander through the Funk Zone. You’ll definitely come across somewhere that pulls you in (that’s half the fun of it!)

Day 2

Breakfast – Chad’s Cafe

Time to fuel up for the day!

For your second morning, you are heading to Chad’s Cafe for breakfast with a view! This place has been serving breakfast and lunch since 1957 and is still family-run, which makes the whole experience even better.

The location is another big part of why we love it. Chad’s sits at 216 W Cabrillo Boulevard, right between the harbor and Stearns Wharf, with ocean views and outdoor patio seating. It’s a lovely, relaxed way to ease into the morning with a proper Santa Barbara backdrop.

The menu covers all the comforting staples, with popular options including buttermilk pancakes, eggs Benedict, omelets, breakfast burritos, and chicken-fried steak and eggs. We went with the breakfast burrito and the buttermilk pancakes (one each, obviously), and both were delicious!

Chad’s opens from 7 am, and we recommend getting there early since it’s well-known and can get busy during peak breakfast hours. You’ll definitely want plenty of time before your morning tour!

Option 1: Morning/Afternoon – Trade the coast for Santa Barbara’s vineyards

Cheers!

Wandering through the vineyard

If you want to experience Santa Barbara’s wine country without worrying about driving, this small-group wine tour is an amazing option for your second day. It starts at 10 am and runs for about 7 hours, finishing around 5 pm, making it a full but incredibly rewarding day out.

This adventure focuses on visiting private vineyard estates, so instead of crowded tasting rooms, you’ll head to intimate, family-owned wineries that aren’t open to the general public. It’s a much more relaxed and exclusive way to explore the region.

Your guide picks you up and handles everything, so all you have to do is sit back and enjoy the ride. You’ll cruise through the countryside, hear fun local stories, and make a few photo stops along the way before you even get to your first tasting.

At each vineyard, you’ll stroll through the vines, settle in for relaxed tastings, and try a range of small-production wines you won’t find just anywhere. Nothing feels rushed, so you can actually slow down, sip properly, and enjoy each stop instead of hopping in and out.

There’s also an organic lunch included, served with a view, which is the perfect excuse to sit back, soak it all in, and take a break between tastings.

This is one of the two options for today, and it’s definitely the easier one logistically since no driving is required. It’s a great choice if you didn’t bring a car or simply want a more relaxed, all-inclusive day in wine country.

Option 2: Morning – Soar above the treetops on a zipline adventure

All geared up and ready to go!

If you’re up for something a little more adventurous, this ziplining tour is such a fun way to start your second day. Instead of just admiring the Santa Ynez Valley from afar, you’ll actually soar right over it on some of the longest and fastest ziplines in California. We recommend booking the 10 am time slot, which gives you enough time for breakfast in Santa Barbara and the drive over without feeling rushed.

The only thing with this option is that it’s about an hour’s drive from Santa Barbara, so you’ll need a car to get there. It’s a great choice if you drove in or are renting a car for your trip.

Once you arrive, the experience kicks off with a ride up the mountainside in a rugged 4×4, climbing over 1,000 feet (305 meters) through open landscapes with incredible views. By the time you reach the top, the valley stretches out below you, setting the stage for what’s to come.

After a safety briefing and getting geared up, you’ll take on a series of ziplines, including one of the longest in California. Expect big views, a serious adrenaline rush, and plenty of laughs as you fly between canyons. Each line gives you a slightly different perspective of the valley, which keeps the experience feeling fresh and exciting the whole way through.

With small group sizes, minimal waiting around, and nonstop action from start to finish, it’s no surprise this tour racks up so many five-star reviews. So, if you’re craving something a little more exciting, this one definitely delivers.

Lunch – Santa Barbara Public Market

If you went for the zipline option this morning, the Santa Barbara Public Market is the perfect spot for a casual, low-key lunch before the afternoon kicks off.

Located downtown, it is an easy place to work into the day, especially if you want something quick and central without committing to a full sit-down meal. The market brings together a mix of local food vendors under one roof, so everyone can choose something different and keep lunch as light as they like.

One thing to keep in mind: you do have a taco tour starting at 4 pm, so it’s best not to go too heavy at lunch. Grab something simple (like a salad, a small plate, or a light bite) and save your appetite for the afternoon!

If you went for the wine tour option, you will have already eaten, so you can skip straight to the evening section below!

Afternoon – Explore downtown (a little more!)

Depending on driving times and how long you spent at lunch, you now have an hour or two to wander State Street and explore a bit more of downtown before your taco tour. There might be a few spots from yesterday morning that you want to revisit, or just go for a wander and see if anything strikes your fancy!

The starting point for the taco tour is about a 4-minute walk from the southern end of State Street, so you can naturally make your way down towards it during the afternoon without needing to rush or plan a route.

Early Dinner – Get to know Santa Barbara one taco at a time

Tacos, my favorite food!

Yes, these were incredible

If you want to experience Santa Barbara’s food scene without second-guessing where to go, this small-group taco tour is such a fun way to do it. You can choose between a 12 or 4 pm tour, but the latter option works perfectly as an early dinner after your afternoon exploring.

This experience takes you to five hand-picked taco spots around downtown, so instead of guessing where to eat, you’ll be led straight to some of the best local favorites. Each stop offers something a little different, from classic meats to more unique options, giving you a well-rounded taste of the city.

Along the way, you’ll also get two drinks included and hear fun stories about the area, the food, and the people behind each spot. It’s not just about eating—it’s about getting a feel for Santa Barbara’s food scene in a more personal way.

The tour lasts about 2.5 hours, wrapping up around 6:30–7 pm if you choose the 4 pm option, making it a perfect way to ease into the evening without needing dinner plans afterward.

It’s a small group experience, so it feels relaxed and social without being crowded, and there’s plenty of time to enjoy each stop without feeling rushed.

The starting point is located about a 4-minute walk from the southern end of State Street, so you can easily wander down during your afternoon exploring and arrive right on time. By the end, you’ll be full, happy, and ready to roll into the rest of your evening.

Evening – Take in the evening on State Street

The Santa Barbara Courthouse at night in Santa Barbara California
The courthouse is so pretty at night

Since the taco tour ends near the Courthouse, it makes perfect sense to keep the evening low-key around the State Street area. You’re already in a great spot, and the neighborhood looks especially beautiful as the sun sets.

If you went for the wine tour today and are now looking for somewhere to eat, we recommend milk & honey for an incredible Spanish dining experience, or The Blue Owl if you’re in the mood for something a little different with an Asian fusion twist. Both are excellent choices for a final evening out!

Once you’ve enjoyed a leisurely dinner, head to El Paseo for evening photos. This is one of the most historic corners of downtown, with a Spanish-style courtyard and adobe character that looks really pretty lit up after dark. It’s definitely worth a little detour!

One last thing – before you head off for the night, make sure to snap a final photo outside the courthouse. It looks absolutely stunning in the evening, and it’s the perfect way to close out your two days in Santa Barbara!

Renting a Car in the USA

View of the road and scenery driving down route 66 in USA

The United States is a vast country with diverse landscapes, from bustling cities to scenic national parks. While public transportation exists in major cities, renting a car is often the best way to explore the country’s wide-open spaces and hidden gems.

We always book with Discover Cars and can’t recommend them enough. It’s super easy to compare prices, check company ratings, find the right vehicle for your needs, and add affordable full coverage insurance. If you want a full breakdown, check out our Discover Cars review here.

Tips for Renting a Car in the USA

  • Drive on the right: In the U.S., vehicles drive on the right-hand side of the road, and the driver’s seat is on the left. If this is different than your home country, take some time to adjust before hitting busy streets!
  • Know the local rules: Speed limits, road signs, and driving laws can differ between states. For example, turning right on red is generally allowed after a complete stop, unless a sign indicates otherwise. Always check the specific rules for the states you’ll be driving in.
  • Add full insurance: We always recommend full coverage rental insurance, especially in the U.S., where long distances, varying road conditions, and unpredictable weather can lead to unexpected situations. Discover Cars makes it easy (and affordable!) to add this peace of mind when you book.
  • Choose the right car: Consider the nature of your trip. For city driving, a compact car is convenient, while for road trips or national park visits, an SUV might be more comfortable. With Discover Cars, it’s easy to filter by vehicle type, transmission, fuel efficiency, and more to find the perfect fit.

What You Need to Rent a Car in the USA

  • A valid driver’s license from your home country.
  • An International Driving Permit (IDP) is recommended if your license is not in English or uses a non-Roman alphabet. Some rental companies may require it, so it’s best to check in advance.
  • A credit card in the driver’s name is typically required for the security deposit.
  • Most rental companies require drivers to be at least 21 years old, with a young driver surcharge applicable for those under 25. Some companies may have higher age requirements, so make sure you double-check.

AIRALO e-SIM Up To 15% Off With Code “DTRAVEL15”

What’s an eSIM?

An eSIM is a digital version of a SIM card. Instead of buying a little plastic chip and swapping it into your phone, you just download it. It connects your phone to a local network in whatever country you’re visiting — no stores, no waiting, and no fiddling with tiny cards.

In simple terms, it’s the easiest way to get data and stay connected while traveling.

We’ve tested a bunch of eSIMs over the years, and after a few frustrating experiences, we’ve found our favorite — Airalo. It’s fast, reliable, and incredibly easy to use. You can set it up in minutes (even my mom managed it solo on her first try!), and the prices are some of the best out there.
