Looking for the best things to do in Akureyri? I’ve got you covered!

Akureyri is often called the capital of North Iceland, and it’s one of the best places to base yourself if you want to explore this part of the country. It’s a small, scenic town surrounded by mountains and fjord views, but there’s so much to do nearby.

From whale watching and geothermal pools to waterfalls, ziplining, horse riding, and day trips to Lake Mývatn, Akureyri has a brilliant mix of nature, adventure, and easy town activities. So, to help you plan your trip, I’ve put together this guide to the best things to do in Akureyri. Let’s get into it!

Don’t miss out!

Our Top Choice

Humpback whale in Eyjafjordur by Akureyri, Iceland (3)

The tour we loved the most and suggest booking ASAP is this one!

Our FAVORITE thing we did in Akureyri was this whale watching tour! It departs right from downtown, so it’s easy to fit into your day, and seeing humpback whales in the wild against the dramatic mountain backdrop was unforgettable.

Akureyri at a Glance

Akureyri has lots to do outside of outdoor adventure (like a fantastic food tour!)

Akureyri is small, easy to explore, and one of the best bases for discovering North Iceland. Before you start planning your trip, here are a few tips we wish we’d known before visiting.

Important Tip: Book your tours in advance, especially if you’re visiting on a cruise!

Book popular tours early: Akureyri is a popular cruise port, and the best tours can fill up quickly on days when ships are in town. If you’re only visiting for the day, we recommend booking your excursions well in advance. We’d choose either this Lake Mývatn and Goðafoss tour to see North Iceland’s incredible landscapes or a whale watching tour if you’d rather stay closer to town.

Don’t worry about getting around town: Akureyri’s center is compact and very walkable, so it’s easy to explore the cafés, restaurants, shops, Akureyri Church, and Botanical Garden on foot. You won’t need a car unless you’re planning to venture beyond town.

Rent a car or join a tour to explore further: While Akureyri itself is easy to walk around, most of North Iceland’s biggest attractions are outside town. If you want to visit places like Lake Mývatn, Goðafoss, or other natural highlights, you’ll either need to rent a car or book a guided tour, especially if you’re visiting outside the summer months.

How We’d Spend 3 Days in Akureyri

If you’re not visiting Akureyri on a cruise, then you’ll probably want to spend 2-3 days here. We think that 3 days is the ideal amount of time to experience the town itself and explore some of North Iceland’s biggest highlights. Here’s how we would recommend spending 3 days in Akureyri:

Day 1: Start with a whale watching tour before exploring Akureyri on foot. Visit Akureyri Church and wander through the Botanical Garden and browse the town center, and check out the trails in the Kjarnaskógur Forest.

Day 2: Take a full-day trip to Lake Mývatn and Goðafoss Waterfall. This is one of North Iceland’s most spectacular areas, with dramatic volcanic landscapes, geothermal features, and one of Iceland’s most famous waterfalls.

Day 3: Choose your adventure! Go white water rafting, soar above the canyon on a zipline, or head out on an Icelandic horse riding tour. Then, finish up your trip with a relaxing soak at Forest Lagoon.

Things to do in Akureyri

If you’re only going to take one tour from Akureyri, make it this one! It takes you to some of North Iceland’s most famous natural attractions without the stress of hiring a car or figuring out Iceland’s rural roads for yourself.

One of the biggest highlights is Goðafoss, one of Iceland’s most iconic waterfalls. Known as the “Waterfall of the Gods,” it’s around 30 meters (98 feet) wide and plunges into a striking horseshoe-shaped gorge. It’s an incredible sight, and it looks just as impressive in real life as it does in the photos.

Grjótagjá Cave

From there, you’ll continue to the Lake Mývatn region, an area famous for its volcanic landscapes and geothermal activity. Along the way, you’ll visit dramatic lava fields at Dimmuborgir, explore the bubbling mud pools and steaming vents at Hverir, and learn more about the powerful forces that continue to shape Iceland’s landscape. Depending on the itinerary, you may also stop at Grjótagjá Cave or have the option to visit the Mývatn Nature Baths.

What we really like about this tour is that it’s specifically designed with cruise passengers in mind. Departure times are coordinated with cruise ship schedules, and the operator guarantees you’ll be back at the port in plenty of time before your ship departs.

That means you can comfortably explore some of North Iceland’s biggest highlights without worrying about missing your sailing! And even if you’re not arriving by cruise, it’s still one of the easiest and most comprehensive ways to experience the Lake Mývatn area in a single day.

2. Go whale watching

If there’s one thing Akureyri is famous for, it’s whale watching. The city sits at the end of Eyjafjörður, Iceland’s longest fjord, so it’s perfectly placed for getting out on the water and looking for humpback and minke whales, dolphins, and porpoises.

We loved this tour because it departs right from downtown Akureyri, so it should fit seamlessly into your plans, especially if you’re visiting on a cruise or staying in town without a car. The boat sails out into the fjord, where we enjoyed sweeping views of the mountains as we searched for marine life with an expert guide.

Whale watching from Akureyri, Iceland
An incredible experience

Another big plus is that the tour only lasts around 3 hours. We went whale watching in the morning and then had time to explore the town and have a soak in the Forest Lagoon later on – more on that to come.

We also liked the fact that this was a very comfortable experience, which is not always the case with whale watching cruises – trust us, we’ve been on a fair few of them! Thermal overalls are included, and there are indoor and outdoor viewing areas on board, so you can warm up between sightings.

Of course, wildlife is never guaranteed, but Akureyri is one of the best places in Iceland to go whale watching. So if seeing whales in the wild is high on your Iceland bucket list, this is definitely one of the best things to do in Akureyri.

3. Take on the rapids of the East Glacial River

If you’re looking for an adrenaline rush in North Iceland, it doesn’t get much better than this white water rafting tour!

We love white water rafting because it’s a challenging and exciting way to immerse yourself in wild natural scenery – and isn’t that what a trip to Iceland is all about? There’s nothing quite like paddling through powerful rapids and laughing your way downstream with the rest of your raft.

This tour takes place on the East Glacial River, one of Iceland’s premier rafting rivers. The route features thrilling Grade IV rapids and dramatic canyon scenery, and you can guarantee that there will be plenty of heart-pounding moments along the way! Between the rapids, you’ll also have the chance to take in the remote and untouched North Iceland landscape.

For anyone feeling particularly brave, there’s even the opportunity to jump from a cliff into the icy glacial river! It certainly isn’t compulsory, but it’s a fun challenge if you’re looking to push yourself a little further.

And don’t worry if you’ve never been rafting before. You’ll be accompanied by experienced guides who will be on hand throughout the trip to help you navigate the rapids safely.

One thing to keep in mind is that this is a seasonal activity, so it doesn’t run during the winter. But if you’re visiting Akureyri between late spring and early autumn, this is one of the most exciting adventures you can have here!

4. Wander through Akureyri Botanical Garden

Akureyri Botanical Garden in Akureyri, Iceland (2)
Akureyri Botanical Garden

There are so many unique and colorful flowers

When you need a break from all of these big adventures, Akureyri Botanical Garden is the perfect place to chill out for a bit.

This is one of the easiest free things to do in Akureyri, and it’s a great option if you want to get some fresh air without committing to a hike or full-day tour. The garden is right in town, so it’s easy to fit into your itinerary between other activities.

It’s home to around 7,000 plant species, including native Icelandic flora and plants from around the world. That’s pretty impressive when you consider how far north Akureyri is! We definitely recommend visiting if you’re here during the summer when the flower beds are at their best. It’s a really pretty spot for a peaceful walk.

The garden is accessible year-round, but facilities vary by season. From 1 June to 30 September, the summer gates and restrooms are open from 8 am to 10 pm. In winter, the gates remain open, but the toilets are closed.

Akureyri Botanical Garden may not be the most dramatic activity on the list, but that’s why we like it! When you need a break from all of the adrenaline and exploring, it’s the ideal spot to take a breather and enjoy some of Akureyri’s charm.

Who says sightseeing has to happen from the ground?

If you’re looking for a fun way to experience Akureyri, this zipline adventure is well worth adding to your itinerary. Rather than exploring on foot, you’ll soar high above the beautiful Glerárgil River Canyon, taking in views that most visitors never get to see!

The experience includes five ziplines of varying lengths, connected by short walks through the canyon. Along the way, your guides will share interesting facts about the area’s geology, wildlife, and history, so it’s not just an adrenaline-filled activity. You’ll also come away with a much better understanding of this hidden corner of Akureyri.

One of the best things about this tour is that it’s suitable for most people. You don’t need any previous ziplining experience, and all the specialist safety equipment is provided. After a full briefing, you’ll quickly get the hang of it, leaving you free to enjoy the incredible scenery and the thrill of flying across the canyon.

At around two hours long, it’s also easy to fit into your itinerary. You could pair it with a morning spent exploring Akureyri’s town center or unwind at Forest Lagoon afterward for the perfect mix of adventure and relaxation.

Whether you’re traveling as a couple, with friends, or as a family with older children, this is a brilliant way to add a little excitement to your trip. It’s proof that you don’t have to travel far from the town center to find an unforgettable adventure in Akureyri!

6. Visit Akureyri Church and the church steps

No visit to Akureyri is complete without stopping by the town’s most famous landmark!

Perched on a hill overlooking the town, Akureyri Church is one of the city’s best-known buildings. It was designed by renowned Icelandic architect Guðjón Samúelsson, the same man behind Reykjavík’s iconic Hallgrímskirkja, and was consecrated in 1940.

Even if you’re not planning to go inside, it’s well worth making the short walk up to admire the striking architecture. The church’s elevated position also means you’ll be rewarded with lovely views over Akureyri, Eyjafjörður, and the surrounding mountains.

The broad staircase leading up to the church has become one of Akureyri’s most popular photo spots, so don’t forget your camera. It’s the perfect place to pause for a few minutes before continuing your walk around town. Best of all, it’s completely free to visit and only a few minutes from the town center, so it’s super easy to add to your Akureyri itinerary.

7. Taste your way through Akureyri

  • Duration: 2.5 hours

  • Rating: 4.9 stars (check 70+ reviews here)
  • Free Cancellation: Yes

We love this small-group food tour because it’s such a great way to experience local life in Akureyri. As much as we love the scenery and adrenaline-fuelled activities here, the town itself is also worth getting to know.

This tour takes you to several local eateries and hidden gems around town, where you’ll sample a variety of traditional Icelandic dishes while learning about the city’s history and culture. By the end of the tour, you’ll have enjoyed enough tastings to make up a hearty meal, so come hungry!

You’ll get to try a fantastic mix of local favorites, from free-roaming Icelandic lamb and freshly caught fish to Iceland’s famous hot dogs and delicious ice cream. It’s a brilliant introduction to Icelandic cuisine, especially if you’re curious to try authentic dishes but aren’t quite sure where to start.

What makes this tour particularly special is the local guide. As you walk between each stop, they’ll share stories about life in Akureyri, point out places you might otherwise miss, and recommend their favorite cafés, restaurants, and bars for the rest of your trip. It’s the sort of insider knowledge that’s difficult to find on your own and can really help you make the most of your time in the city!

Because Akureyri is relatively small, this tour also doubles as a fantastic introduction to the town itself. You’ll discover quieter streets beyond the main tourist areas and gain a much better feel for the city’s character.

  • Lowest price guarantee – If you happen to find the same tour at a lower price elsewhere, Viator will refund you the price difference.

8. Walk the trails at Kjarnaskógur Forest

See what I mean?

If you want a light little escape into nature, be sure to visit Kjarnaskógur Forest!

Located just outside Akureyri, this peaceful outdoor area is perfect for an easy walk or a break between bigger adventures. There are around 12 kilometers (7.4 miles) of gravel paths to explore, including 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) of illuminated trails, so it’s an ideal place to stretch your legs and enjoy some fresh air.

It’s also well set up for visitors, with picnic tables, playgrounds, toilets, water fountains, and barbecue facilities. It’s especially handy if you’re traveling with kids, and it’s a super easy place to just relax for a couple of hours.

In winter, the area is also used for cross-country skiing, so it’s not just a summer spot. However, even if you’re visiting outside ski season, the forest is still a lovely place for a gentle nature break. While Akureyri is famous for adventure activities like rafting, ziplining, and horse riding, the forest is a great reminder that not every outdoor experience has to be intense!

9. Saddle up for a scenic Icelandic horse riding adventure

Horse riding is a popular activity all over the world, but this small-group tour in Iceland makes it extra special – and not just because of the scenery! Icelandic horses are one of the country’s most iconic symbols. They may be smaller than many other breeds, but they’re super strong and friendly, and they’re also famous for their unique fifth gait, which is known as the tölt. Unlike a trot, the tölt is exceptionally smooth and comfortable, making it a real highlight of riding an Icelandic horse.

This ride takes you through the beautiful North Iceland countryside, following quiet trails once used by Vikings. Along the way, you’ll pass rivers and rolling farmland before reaching Reykjafoss, a beautiful waterfall that’s only accessible on horseback or by foot.

Whether you’ve ridden before or you’re a complete beginner, this experience is suitable for all abilities. Before setting off, you’ll be matched with a horse that suits your experience level, and your guide will explain everything you need to know to help you feel comfortable and confident in the saddle.

We love this tour because rather than rushing from one attraction to the next, you’ll have time to appreciate the scenery and connect with these gentle animals. It’s a really authentic and meaningful North Iceland experience, not to mention a very peaceful way to experience Iceland’s beautiful countryside. But don’t just take my word for it—you can read the glowing reviews here!

10. Unwind in one of Akureyri’s most scenic geothermal pools

Tour Details

  • Duration: 2 hours
  • Time: Entry times between 9 am and 10 pm
  • Highlights: Relax in geothermal infinity pools surrounded by forest, soak while overlooking Eyjafjörður fjord, enjoy the swim-up bar, unwind in the sauna and cold pool, and experience one of North Iceland’s most scenic geothermal spas
  • Inclusions: Forest Lagoon admission, towel, locker, and one drink from the swim-up bar
  • Rating: 4.7 stars (check 50+ reviews here)
  • Free Cancellation: Yes
  • Price: Check price here!

Last but not least, after all that sightseeing and adventure, you’ve earned a soak in one of Iceland’s beautiful geothermal pools! Visiting Forest Lagoon was actually one of our favorite experiences in Akureyri. Tucked away among the trees just outside the town center, it’s a peaceful little oasis with incredible views over Eyjafjörður and the surrounding mountains.

We were exploring nonstop in Akureyri, so we came here on our last day and loved spending a few hours in the warm, mineral-rich water. The lagoon features two geothermal infinity pools, along with a swim-up bar, a sauna, and a cold pool, so we really felt spoiled! We loved moving between the warm water and the cooler air, especially with the fjord stretching out in front of us.

One of the best things about Forest Lagoon is that it’s quieter and more laid-back than some of Iceland’s better-known geothermal spas. It still has that luxurious feel, but you don’t get as many crowds here, so it’s the perfect place to unwind after a busy day exploring North Iceland. In fact, we’d go as far as saying that no trip to Akureyri is complete without experiencing one of Iceland’s famous geothermal bathing traditions!

If you’re trying to decide when to visit, we’d recommend booking an afternoon or evening session, depending on the time of year. We loved watching the light change over the fjord as we relaxed in the warm water. It was the perfect way to round off our time in Akureyri.

Renting a Car in Europe

A coastal road winding through Mallorca, Spain

Exploring Europe by car is a fantastic way to uncover hidden gems—think charming villages, scenic countryside, and off-the-beaten-path spots that trains and buses might miss. Driving here is generally straightforward, but it’s good to be prepared for some regional quirks.

We always use Discover Cars to book our rentals and can’t recommend them enough. It’s super easy to compare prices, check company ratings, find automatic cars (which can be tricky in Europe!), and add affordable full coverage insurance. If you want a full breakdown, check out our Discover Cars review here.

Tips for Renting a Car in Europe

  • Know the local rules: Most countries drive on the right, except the UK, Ireland, Cyprus, and Malta. Road signs and driving laws can vary, so do a quick check before you go.
  • Practice defensive driving: In parts of Europe, especially in the south, driving can feel fast-paced and a little unpredictable. Make sure you stay alert and keep a safe following distance.
  • Insurance is essential: I highly recommend adding full coverage insurance to your rental. Whether it’s a parking lot ding or a chipped windshield on a mountain road, full protection gives you peace of mind. Plus, it’s super affordable through Discover Cars!
  • Pick the right vehicle: Most rentals in Europe are manual, and automatic cars are limited, so book early if that’s what you need. A compact car is also ideal for narrow roads and tight parking. On Discover Cars, you can easily filter for everything you need.
  • Watch for restricted zones: Many cities have low-emission or restricted traffic zones. Driving into these without a permit can result in fines, so always check local rules if you’re heading into a city center.
  • Be prepared for border crossings: While crossing borders is usually easy within the Schengen Zone, some rental companies require you to declare your travel plans in advance. Always check with Discover Cars if you’re planning to drive into another country.

What You Need to Rent a Car in Europe

  • A valid driver’s license from your home country.
  • If you’re from outside the EU, an International Driving Permit (IDP) is recommended—and in some countries, it’s legally required.
  • A credit card in the driver’s name is typically needed for the security deposit.
  • Most rental companies require drivers to be at least 21 years old. If you’re under 25, expect a young driver surcharge—and in some countries, the minimum age may be higher.

What’s an eSIM?

An eSIM is a digital version of a SIM card. Instead of buying a little plastic chip and swapping it into your phone, you just download it. It connects your phone to a local network in whatever country you’re visiting — no stores, no waiting, and no fiddling with tiny cards.

In simple terms, it’s the easiest way to get data and stay connected while traveling.

We’ve tested a bunch of eSIMs over the years, and after a few frustrating experiences, we’ve found our favorite — Airalo. It’s fast, reliable, and incredibly easy to use. You can set it up in minutes (even my mom managed it solo on her first try!), and the prices are some of the best out there.
