Itinerary Overview

Mauritius is a relatively small island, but don’t let its size fool you. There is a ton you can see and do.
In this five-day itinerary, you’ll explore the West Coast, Port Louis and Pamplemousses, Mahébourg, and the stunning landscapes of Le Morne, Chamarel, and Tamarin. Because of this, some days are more relaxed and local, while others involve longer drives across the island.
To keep things simple and efficient, this itinerary is designed around staying on the West Coast, particularly in areas like Flic en Flac or Tamarin. This region offers the best balance of accessibility and convenience, making it easy to reach highlights like Le Morne Brabant and the dramatic southwest, while still keeping northern attractions within reach.
For getting around, renting a car is by far the most practical choice. It gives you the most flexibility for reaching tour meeting points, heading out to restaurants, and managing the cross-island drives at your own pace. Taxis or private transfers can work too, but they’re usually more expensive and less flexible, while public transport is simply not practical for a more structured itinerary like this.
Here’s a quick rundown of how we recommend spending five perfect days in Mauritius:
Day 1: Ease into the capital with a relaxed morning at Caudan Waterfront, taste your way through the city on a Port Louis street food tour, and slow down in the afternoon at the beautiful Pamplemousses Botanical Garden.
Day 2: Head to the southeast coast to sail to Île aux Cerfs on a full-day catamaran cruise, complete with snorkeling, a waterfall visit, and a relaxed seafood dinner near the marina before driving back.
Day 3: Choose your own adventure: either tackle the iconic early-morning hike up Le Morne Brabant for spectacular views, or take the gentler route inland to explore the historic Tea Route and Bois Chéri plantation.
Day 4: See the highlights of Mauritius’ scenic southwest on a full-day guided tour, taking in Trou aux Cerfs, Grand Bassin, Black River Gorges, and the Seven Coloured Earth, before a relaxed dinner back on the West Coast.
Day 5: Enjoy a slow, easy final morning by the beach, explore the peaceful Tamarin River on a guided sunset kayak tour, and celebrate your last night with a special seafood dinner by the water.
Day 1
Morning – Ease into Port Louis with a relaxed waterfront wander

Nobody wants to feel rushed on the first day, so rather than jumping straight on a boat or heading to a museum, give yourself time to wander around Caudan Waterfront before your food tour kicks off.
If you’re driving, there are a couple of easy spots to park nearby, including the Marina Quay Parking and the main Port Louis parking garage. We recommend arriving in Port Louis around 9 or 9:30 am, which gives you enough time for a gentle start before your tour begins around 10 to 11 am, depending on the day.
Here are a few of our favorite ways to spend a relaxed morning in this area:
- Grab a coffee by the waterfront: Caudan Waterfront is one of the easiest, most relaxed spots to ease yourself into Port Louis. With its harbor views and a slightly more polished feel, it’s a nice contrast to the busier streets you’ll explore later on. Café LUX* Caudan is one of our favorite spots here, right on the water, and it opens at 8 am (nice and early for your first day!).
- Stroll along the promenade: Once you’re caffeinated, wander along the waterfront at your own pace. You’ll definitely want to snap a few photos here. The views of the marina and palm-lined walkways are simply stunning!
- Browse a few of the shops: There are plenty of boutiques, souvenir shops, and casual places around Caudan Waterfront. Just see what catches your eye and don’t be afraid to pop in for a look around.
- Take a quick look towards the market area: If you have time, you can also venture a little further into the city for a first glimpse of the busier streets around central Port Louis. Keep this brief, though, as the food tour itself will properly introduce you to the market and the local street food scene.
Once you’re ready, head over to the Casino at Caudan Waterfront around 10 or 11 am to kick off your Port Louis street food tour.
Late Morning / Lunch – Taste your way around Port Louis

This Port Louis street food tour is the main experience of your first day, and honestly, it’s such a fun way to dive into Mauritius beyond the beaches. Rather than just grabbing a few snacks, it feels like a guided introduction to the island through its food, streets, and cultural mix—all while exploring the capital.
Depending on the day, the tour begins from Caudan Waterfront around 10 or 11 am and takes you through central Port Louis, stopping at local spots that showcase some of the island’s most loved street food.
Mauritian food culture is incredibly rich thanks to its mix of Indian, Chinese, Creole, and French influences, and that blend is exactly what makes eating here so interesting. On this tour, you’ll try staples like dholl puri and roti, along with Chinese sweets, fresh fruit, and sugarcane juice.

As you explore, your guide shares the stories behind each dish and how different communities shaped Mauritius’ food scene. It’s such a fun (and delicious!) way to learn about the island’s history and culture.
You’ll also wander through Chinatown and the Central Market, seeing everyday life in Port Louis and experiencing the city’s energy up close.
We think this is a great tour to do early in your trip since it gives you a better idea of what to order for the rest of your time here. Just make sure you arrive hungry—the tour wraps up around 1 to 2 pm, and you’ll leave very full!

Afternoon – Slow things down at the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden

After your food tour wraps up around 1 to 2 pm, it’s the perfect time to slow things down with a visit to the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden. It’s located in Pamplemousses, just about 10 km (6.2 miles) from Port Louis, so the journey is quick, usually only 10 to 15 minutes by car or taxi, making it an easy and manageable afternoon stop.
If you’re driving, this is one of the simplest transfers in the itinerary. The roads are straightforward, and you’ll find visitor info and maps available once you arrive. If you’d rather not drive, grabbing a taxi is just as easy, and the short ride makes it a stress-free option after your tour.
The grounds are huge, so plan to spend a couple of hours wandering. The giant water lilies are the standout highlight and just as impressive in person as they look in photos. There are also massive palm collections and plenty of shaded walking paths, so you won’t be in the sun the entire time.
Entry is only 300 Mauritian Rupees (around $6–7 USD), making it one of the more affordable activities on the island. It’s a great way to add a bit of culture to your day without committing to anything too intensive.
This is a really nice break from all the beach days and boat trips, if you’re looking for something slower-paced. It’s one of the island’s most well-known attractions, and it’s easy to see why!
Dinner – Wapalapam La Place

After the botanical gardens, head back into Port Louis for dinner at Wapalapam La Place, which is such a fun and relaxed spot to round off your first day.
We absolutely love this spot because it’s got a little bit more of an atmosphere than a simple hotel dinner. It also serves fantastic Indian Ocean-inspired food, which makes it feel like a nice continuation of the island’s food scene after your late-morning street food tour. We went with the seafood curry, and it was divine!
Similar to other restaurants in the area, Wapalapam La Place is open until 10 pm, so it works really well for a relaxed dinner without needing to rush. Just note that it’s closed on Sundays, so plan accordingly.
Evening – Catch a live performance in Port Louis
After dinner at Wapalapam La Place, head towards the Le Caudan Waterfront and Le Suffren marina area for a relaxed evening drink and (if the timing is right) some live music!
This part of Port Louis is one of the city’s easiest evening areas to explore, with bars, lounges, and regular events around the waterfront, so it feels pretty natural to end the day here.
If you’re visiting later in the week (like on a Thursday, Friday, or Saturday), there’s a good chance you’ll find live music around the marina side, especially near Le Suffren, where venues sometimes host local bands and DJs. Riva Waterfront Restaurant & Lounge is a great spot that often has live music. It’s the perfect place if you’re in the mood to keep the night going a little longer!
Day 2
Breakfast – Keep it simple before the drive

You’ll want to leave the West Coast by around 7 am today, so try to keep breakfast as quick and easy as possible! We recommend grabbing something at your hotel or picking up a light bite nearby.
Bear in mind, you’ve got a fixed cruise departure and a decent drive ahead, so the goal is to get moving without stress. A simple coffee and a small bite to eat are all you need before hitting the road.
Morning / Afternoon – Sail to Île aux Cerfs on a full-day catamaran cruise

Today is all about one of the most classic full-day experiences in Mauritius—this catamaran cruise to Île aux Cerfs. It ended up being one of our favorite days on the island and is the perfect mix of scenery, relaxation, and great food.
Since most southeast departures run from the Mahébourg/Pointe Jérôme area, you’ll want to plan an early start. If you’re staying on the west coast (like Flic en Flac), we recommend leaving around 7 am. The drive takes about 40 minutes in ideal conditions, but giving yourself extra time helps avoid any stress before the 9 am departure. You can drive yourself or arrange a taxi or private transfer, which is much more reliable than buses for a timed tour like this.

Once you’re onboard, though, the effort is over. The day starts with a relaxed sail along the southeast coast, where we really started to appreciate just how beautiful Mauritius is. With mountains in the distance and that unreal turquoise water below, it felt like a dream. The whole vibe was super laid-back, with music playing and drinks flowing. It’s more like a floating beach club than a tour!
There’s a stop for snorkeling in clear, fish-filled water, plus a pass by the Grand River South East waterfall, which adds a nice bit of variety. You’ll also have time to enjoy Île aux Cerfs itself before heading back and wrapping up around 4 or 5 pm.
And lunch was definitely a highlight for us! If you can, go for the crayfish option. It felt like a bit of an upgrade from your typical boat BBQ and made the whole experience feel more special. Paired with the unlimited drinks, it was the perfect tropical day trip. Honestly, it’s no surprise that this tour has 380+ 5-star reviews – read them here!
Book this epic catamaran cruise here and enjoy free cancellation!
Dinner – Restaurant du Lac

For dinner, don’t rush back across the island after stepping off the boat. Instead, stay in the Pointe Jérôme and Mahébourg area and head to Restaurant du Lac. Trust us, after a full day out on the water, this will be exactly what you need. Even better, it’s just a 1-minute drive from the finishing point of the tour (super handy), so you won’t have to travel far!
The setting of this restaurant couldn’t be more perfect. It’s calm, breezy, and right by the water, perfect for unwinding as the evening sets in. As for the food, seafood is the highlight here, so you can expect freshly grilled fish, sizzling prawn curries, and maybe a cocktail (or two). Honestly, what more could you ask for after a perfect day at sea?
Evening – Drive back to the West Coast after dinner

After dinner, it’s time to head back to your accommodation on the West Coast. The good news is you’ve already split the journey back by stopping for dinner by the port, so the drive will feel much more manageable than doing it all in one go straight after the tour.
Once you get back to your hotel, you can just relax and get some rest before tomorrow’s adventures!
Day 3
Option 1: Morning – Hike Le Morne Brabant for one of the island’s most iconic views

Today is your big adventure day, and if you’re up for something active, this Le Morne Brabant hike is hands down one of the most unforgettable experiences in Mauritius. It’s not just about the views—this UNESCO World Heritage Site carries a powerful history and is one of the island’s most iconic landmarks.
The hike starts early at 6:50 am, so plan to leave your accommodation with enough time to arrive and meet your guide. From Flic en Flac, the drive is only about 40 minutes, which makes this a really doable morning activity from the west coast. If you’re not driving, a taxi or prearranged transfer is your best bet, as public transport isn’t practical this early.

We chose the early start to beat the heat and met our guide, Matthieu, before heading to the base. The first section is fairly steady, but it quickly becomes more challenging. As you climb higher, it gets steeper and more hands-on, especially near the top, where there are some scrambling sections. This is not a casual walk, but a 3 to 4-hour mountain climb, so decent fitness, proper footwear, and water are essential.
That said, the reward is absolutely worth it. Reaching the summit felt incredible, with sweeping views over the coastline and that unreal turquoise lagoon below. Combined with the powerful history of the mountain, it’s easily one of the most memorable experiences on the island—and a pretty epic way to start your day!
Book this 5-star tour here and get ready for the hike of a lifetime!
Option 1: Lunch – Refuel in Le Morne after the hike
After your hike, head straight to the beautiful Wapalapam in Le Morne for a well-earned lunch. It’s just a short drive from the finishing point of the tour, making it a super practical place to stop. And trust us, after tackling one of the island’s most iconic hikes, you won’t want to have to drive anywhere!
Once you’re here, take your time to refuel properly with a hearty curry or maybe the catch of the day. You’ll soon get an idea of whether you want to settle into a more relaxed afternoon or keep exploring.
Option 1: Afternoon – Keep things relaxed on the southwest coast

Once you’ve finished your lunch, use the afternoon as a chance to slow things down at Le Morne Beach, or go for a little stroll along the coast to really take in the southwest scenery at your own pace.
This should feel like a reward for your early effort (you’ve earned it!). Go for a swim, spend a quiet hour on the sand, or grab a drink. Honestly, an ice-cold beer or smoothie just hits different after you’ve been walking all day!
Basically, the afternoon is yours, and there’s no right or wrong way to spend it.
Option 1: Dinner / Evening – Keep it simple back on the West Coast

After a full day of hiking and chilling at the beach, the best call is to head back towards your hotel on the West Coast for an easy dinner and a low-key evening. Because Le Morne is only around 40 minutes from Flic en Flac, you shouldn’t be too worn out by the return journey.
Once you’re back, choose something close by for dinner, either at your hotel or a local spot nearby that’s caught your eye. You’ve already done the main activity for the day, so there’s no need to stress yourself out by overthinking dinner. This is one of those evenings where less is better. Just eat, unwind, and call it a night when you’re ready!
Option 2: Morning / Afternoon – Take the gentler route through inland Mauritius on the Tea Route

If you’re not up for the Le Morne hike, this is a fantastic (and much easier) alternative for Day 3. The Mauritius Tea Route offers a slower-paced, scenic day through the island’s lush south, swapping coastal views for rolling green plantations and historic estates.
This is a self-guided route linking three main stops—Domaine des Aubineaux, Bois Chéri, and Saint Aubin—and it’s one of the best ways to experience a more traditional, cultural side of Mauritius. The day is fairly flexible, but most sites are open from around 9 am to 5 pm, so you can start mid-morning and explore at your own pace through the afternoon.
Because the stops are spread out across the south and central parts of the island, this day works best if you have a rental car or arrange a driver. Public transport is possible in theory, but it’s not very practical for this route. From the West Coast, the drive is straightforward and makes for a really enjoyable change of scenery.
What we loved most was the variety. One minute you’re walking through tea plantations, the next you’re exploring colonial houses or learning about sugar and rum production. Bois Chéri was the standout for us—it’s the oldest tea plantation in Mauritius, and the tasting experience was such a highlight. Sitting on the terrace overlooking the plantation with a fresh cup of tea felt pretty special.
Domaine des Aubineaux adds a more historical feel with its colonial home and gardens, while Saint Aubin rounds out the day with tropical agriculture and rum. If you’re looking to slow things down and see a different side of Mauritius, this route is well worth it.
Option 2: Lunch – Build in lunch at Bois Chéri
For lunch, we suggest timing your day so that you hit Bois Chéri around lunchtime. Bois Chéri is one of the best-known parts of the route, and you’ll definitely want to take some time to sit down and fully enjoy the plantation setting. It also helps the inland side of Mauritius feel like a proper experience, rather than just a drive between attractions.
If you’re not sure where to stop, Le Bois Cheri Restaurant is our top pick here. It’s very well reviewed, located just outside of town, and the views over the tea fields are fantastic!
Option 2: Late Afternoon / Evening – Return to the West Coast

After your final Tea Route stop, make your way back to your base on the West Coast. It’s a straightforward return, and after a day spent exploring the island’s inland landscapes, the journey back will feel like a natural transition to the evening.
This has been a full day, but not an overly demanding one, so you’ve got some flexibility with how you spend the evening. You can either keep things simple with dinner near your hotel, or, if you’re in the mood (and you’ve got the energy), use it as an opportunity for a slightly more special sit-down meal. Just go with whatever feels right when you’re back!
Day 4
Morning / Afternoon – See the highlights of Mauritius’ scenic southwest on a full-day tour

After yesterday’s adventure, today is all about seeing more of Mauritius the easy way. This southwest Mauritius tour is one of the most straightforward sightseeing days in the itinerary, letting you cover a huge part of the island without having to plan the route yourself.
The tour typically starts around 8:30 am (depending on your hotel pickup) and runs for about 8 hours, wrapping up around 4:30 or 5 pm with drop-off back at your accommodation. It’s a really relaxed way to experience a lot in one day, especially after a more active Day 3.
What makes this tour so worthwhile is the variety. The southwest shows a completely different side of Mauritius, with crater lakes, forested viewpoints, waterfalls, and sacred sites. In just one day, you’ll visit highlights like Trou aux Cerfs, Grand Bassin, viewpoints over Black River Gorges National Park, Alexandra Falls, Chamarel Waterfall, and the Seven Coloured Earth.

Many tours also include extras like a rum tasting and lunch, which helps make the whole experience feel even more complete.
It’s also worth noting how much easier this day is with transport included. The southwest has a lot of incredible stops, but they’re spread out, so having a driver and guide takes away the stress of navigating it all yourself.
It’s a pretty action-packed day, but it breaks up all the beach time nicely. For first-time visitors especially, we think this is a great way to experience one of the most beautiful and varied parts of Mauritius. And we’re not alone – read hundreds of glowing reviews here!

Dinner / Evening – Keep it relaxed on the West Coast

After a full day of sightseeing, we think dinner should stay close to your hotel base on the West Coast, either in Flic en Flac or Tamarin, depending on where you’re staying. There really is no need to travel far after a tour that already covers so much of the island!
If you’re in Flic en Flac or nearby, Créole Shack is always a treat (just remember it’s reservation only and they’re closed on Saturdays and Sundays!). We tried their traditional Créole chicken, but everything coming out of the kitchen looked divine! Or, if you’re in Tamarin or Black River, Happy Rajah is a great pick if you’re in the mood for flavor-packed Indian dishes.
After a day like this, you don’t need to overthink dinner. A simple, relaxed spot (ideally by the beach or close to your accommodation) is the perfect way to end the day!
Day 5
Morning – Enjoy a slower final morning

With today’s tour not starting until 1:30 pm, this is the perfect opportunity to enjoy a more relaxed start to your day. And because you’re already based on the West Coast where the tour is, you won’t have to set an alarm or gear yourself up for a long transfer (thank goodness!).
Here are a few of our favorite ways to spend a slow morning:
- Have a relaxed breakfast by the beach – After several earlier starts in the itinerary, this is a good morning to slow down and enjoy breakfast properly. You’ll definitely want to soak up every last bit of that relaxed island life (and delicious island food) before you head home.
- Spend some time on the beach – If you’re staying in Flic en Flac or Tamarin, the beach is another obvious option. This works especially well because you don’t have to drive anywhere.
- Enjoy a slow hotel morning – This is also a nice place in the itinerary to simply take things easy. Going for a swim, taking a walk, or lounging in the sun with a good book works perfectly well here, especially since you’ll be busy all afternoon.
When you’re ready, make your way over to Tamarin. We recommend aiming to arrive by at least 1 pm, so you have plenty of time to check in for your kayak tour before the 1:30 pm start.
Afternoon – Explore the Tamarin River by kayak

Today is all about slowing things down, and this guided kayak tour on the Tamarin River is the perfect way to do it. After a few busy days, this feels like a calm and scenic change of pace, and it ended up being one of the most peaceful experiences we had in Mauritius.
Since it starts in Tamarin, this is also one of the easiest days in the itinerary. If you’re staying on the west coast, it’s a quick drive or taxi ride, so there’s no need for an early start or long travel. The tour begins at 1:30 pm and lasts about 2 hours and 30 minutes, finishing around 4 pm, which means you can enjoy a relaxed morning beforehand.

Once you’re on the water, the whole vibe shifts. Instead of the open ocean, you’ll be gliding along calm river water surrounded by lush greenery and mangroves. It feels quieter, more intimate, and like a completely different side of Mauritius.
We also loved that it’s a guided tour. The local guides share insights about the area and help navigate the best routes through the mangroves, which makes a big difference since there are shallow sections and hidden turns along the way. Keep an eye out for wildlife, too! You might spot birds, fruit bats, and fish as you paddle along.
It’s active, but not intense, which is exactly what makes it so enjoyable. For a final day, this is such a memorable and relaxing way to experience Mauritius.
Read 120+ 5-star reviews and book this peaceful paddle here!
Dinner/Evening – The Bay Guest House & Restaurant

For your last evening, head to The Bay Guest House & Restaurant for something truly special. The restaurant itself is located in Black River, but it is really worth the short trip for the sunset views!
We absolutely love this spot for your final evening because it’s right on the water, and it feels a little more elevated than a standard hotel restaurant (but it’s not awkward to reach, and it’s by no means stuffy or overly formal).
For food, you’ll find all the island favorites like grilled prawns, lobster, and massive seafood platters, but you can’t really go wrong with whatever you choose! And of course, you’ll also have to have one last cocktail or glass of wine before you jet off home.
This really is a proper send-off dinner, giving your trip the perfect finish it deserves!
