Planning a trip to Moorea, French Polynesia, and on the hunt for the perfect bungalow? You’re in the right place!

Moorea is one of the most accessible and stunning islands in French Polynesia, and it’s famous for its incredible overwater and beachside bungalows. While Bora Bora often gets all the attention, Moorea offers a much more intimate, relaxed, and authentic Polynesian experience (which is always a plus in our book!).

But that authenticity does come at a cost, and finding a bungalow can be (in all honesty) a bit of a headache. That’s why we’re giving you the scoop on the best overwater and beachside bungalows in Moorea, so you can spend less time researching and more time daydreaming about your trip!

Sound good? Let’s get to it!

Don’t Miss Out On Our Top Choice!

About Overwater Bungalows in Moorea

Bungalows in Moorea, French Polynesia (1)
Paradise!

When many people picture French Polynesia, they instantly imagine the iconic overwater bungalows, and Moorea is one of the easiest places to experience that dream for yourself.

However, when planning your trip, it’s important to know that true overwater bungalows are relatively limited in Moorea and usually come with a luxury price tag. So if you’re traveling on a budget (or just want better value), beachside bungalows are usually the way to go.

What really makes Moorea stand out, though, isn’t just the bungalow itself; it’s everything around it. The crystal-clear lagoons, the lush green mountains, and the dramatic volcanic peaks rising in the background of every photo you take; it really is such a special place. Plus, compared to places like Bora Bora, Moorea feels a lot more relaxed, less crowded, and more personal compared to Polynesia’s bigger-name honeymoon islands.

With that in mind, choosing the right area of the island is just as important as choosing the bungalow itself. Most of the well-known bungalow stays are located around Maharepa and Papetoai on the north coast, where you’ll also find the island’s best selection of restaurants and shops. But if you’re after something quieter, Ha’apiti on the west coast offers a slower pace and a more local, laid-back vibe.

Here’s a quick look at our top picks for each style of stay:

  • Overwater Bungalows: These are the classic, bucket-list stays suspended directly over the lagoon. Our top pick is Manava Beach Resort & Spa Moorea, which offers a perfect blend of Polynesian luxury and modern comforts right in Maharepa.
  • Beachside Bungalows: These offer a more relaxed, affordable alternative with your toes right in the sand. Our top pick is Linareva Moorea Beach Resort, a charming, family-run property in Ha’apiti that feels incredibly peaceful and authentic.

Important Tip

Multiple Moorea trips have taught us that this city doesn’t reward spontaneity when it comes to planning. The good places get snapped up months in advance, leaving the overpriced and underwhelming options for last-minute travelers.

The sweet spot for booking Moorea overwater bungalows is 3-4 months out—enough time to secure good rates but not so far ahead that you’re locking in plans excessively early.

The Best Overwater Bungalows in Moorea

Overwater Bungalows

Bungalows in Moorea, French Polynesia (3)
Overwater bungalows are iconic

Pros

  • Direct access to the lagoon from your private deck
  • Incredible, unobstructed views of the water and marine life
  • The ultimate romantic bucket-list experience

Cons

  • The most expensive accommodation option on the island
  • Very limited availability (they book up months in advance)
  • Can be noisy if the water is choppy or if boats pass by

If you’re yearning for that classic French Polynesian postcard experience, an overwater bungalow is exactly what you’re after. These are the iconic, thatched-roof suites suspended directly over the crystal-clear lagoon, often featuring glass floor panels so you can watch tropical fish glide by without even leaving your room.

In Moorea, overwater bungalows are typically part of upscale resorts, so they sit firmly on the luxury end of the spectrum. That means you won’t find many true budget or even mid-range options in this category. Instead, these stays are designed for honeymooners, special occasions, or travelers who really want to treat themselves to something unforgettable.

Because there are only a limited number of overwater bungalows on the island (and demand is consistently high), they tend to book out quickly and come with premium price tags. It’s not unusual to reserve at least a month or a year in advance, especially if you’re traveling during peak seasons or hoping for a specific resort or room type.

That said, the experience is something straight out of a storybook. There’s something surreal about waking up to the gentle sound of water beneath you and stepping out onto your private deck. Add in some incredible sunset views, and it’s easy to see why overwater bungalows remain one of the most sought-after stays in the world.

If you want the ultimate luxury experience on the best beach in Moorea, Sofitel Kia Ora Moorea Beach Resort is spectacular. Located in Tema’e on the northeast coast, this resort sits on the longest white sand beach on the island, right inside a protected marine area. We absolutely loved the snorkeling here, the water is crystal clear and so full of life right off the beach!

The overwater bungalows here are simply stunning, blending laid-back Tahitian living with a touch of French flair. The resort also recently renovated its common areas, and the luxury spa and outdoor swimming pool are the definition of luxury.

Prices usually begin at around $500 USD per night and can go up to $3,200+ USD for the largest premium overwater villas.

Hilton Moorea Lagoon Resort & Spa – $$$$

For incredible views and top-tier amenities, the Hilton Moorea Lagoon Resort & Spa is another excellent choice. It’s tucked away in Papetoai (right between the famous Cook’s Bay and Opunohu Bay), so the setting here couldn’t be more perfect for a honeymoon or a romantic getaway.

This resort is itself home to the only over-water restaurant in Moorea (Toatea Bar & Creperie), a lagoon-style pool, and a full-service spa you’ll definitely want to take full advantage of. You’ll also have the option of canoe breakfast delivery, which is such a fun little extra!

In terms of pricing, you can expect rates to typically start from around $730 to $1,100+ USD per night, depending on the season and bungalow type.

Manava Beach Resort & Spa Moorea – $$$

If you’re looking for something a little more authentic, Manava Beach Resort & Spa Moorea is our top pick. Located in Maharepa, this resort actually sits on the site of the very first hotel built by the “Bali Hai Boys,” making it the historic birthplace of the overwater bungalow!

One of the things that really stands out about this property is its commitment to eco-responsibility. The To’a Nui coral nursery sits right beneath the bungalows, so when you book a stay here, you’re not just staying over the lagoon, you’re helping protect it too.

In terms of accommodation, you’ll find a range of options, with the Premium Overwater Bungalows offering direct lagoon access and private sun decks. You’ll also have access to a spa, which is always a treat!  For pricing, you can expect rates to start from around $690 USD per night, rising to $1,330+ USD per night for premium overwater options.

Beachside Bungalows

Bungalows in Moorea, French Polynesia (5)
Beachside bungalows are an excellent (and more affordable!) option as well

Pros

  • Much more affordable than overwater options
  • Direct access to the beach with your toes in the sand
  • Often quieter and more private, tucked into tropical gardens

Cons

  • No direct jump-into-the-water access from your deck
  • Views might be partially blocked by palm trees or other bungalows
  • Can feel less “exclusive” than the overwater resorts

Beachside bungalows in Moorea offer a more relaxed (and often far more affordable) alternative to the island’s famous overwater stays, while still delivering that dreamy, lagoon-front setting.

Despite the lower price point, you still get the iconic thatched-roof look, open-air rooms, and that laid-back tropical feel, just without the hefty price tag that comes with overwater bungalows. In many cases, you’re only steps from the lagoon anyway, so you’re not missing out on the experience (just paying less for it).

Another big plus is the atmosphere. Many beachside bungalows are part of smaller, family-run businesses or boutique hotels, which gives your stay a much more personal and authentic feel. Instead of large, busy resorts, you’ll often find quieter properties where it’s easier to connect with the local culture and pace of life.

You’ll find beachside bungalows dotted all around Moorea, including the livelier area of Maharepa (close to restaurants and shops) and the peaceful, sunset-facing shores of Ha’apiti, which offer a slower, more local vibe.

In our opinion, beachside bungalows are a great fit for families, budget-conscious travelers, or couples who plan to spend most of their time out exploring rather than staying in the room. They’re just as beautiful, and a whole lot more affordable.

Hotel Kaveka – $$$

Our first beach bungalow pick is Hotel Kaveka, which sits right on Cook’s Bay and offers a really unique blend of Polynesian style and modern amenities. One of the highlights here is the overwater restaurant, which has such a fun, laid-back vibe and serves a mix of Chinese, French, and Tahitian dishes, all with beautiful views out over the bay.

The beachfront bungalows are simple but comfortable, placing you just steps from the water, which makes it easy to fully enjoy everything an island getaway has to offer.

In terms of pricing, rates usually begin at around $320 USD per night and can easily go up to $760+ USD for the premium beachfront options, depending on the season and availability.

Poerani Moorea – $$$

For a more private, boutique-style stay, Poerani Moorea is another beautiful option that we love to recommend. Also located in Maharepa, this property offers personalized, apartment-style accommodations and a rare stretch of private beachfront with soft sand and easy lagoon access (the dream!).

The villas come with full kitchens and plenty of space to relax, making them ideal for longer stays or travelers who prefer a bit more independence. We especially loved the communal Fare Pote’e space, which adds a welcoming, social feel while still keeping things peaceful and low-key.

Rates typically range from around $269 to $803 USD per night, depending on the suite or villa you choose, making it a great value for the level of comfort and privacy you get!

Fare Oaoa Ha’apiti – $$$

Fare Oaoa Haapiti Moorea, French Polynesia (1)

If you want to be right on the sand on the quieter west coast, Fare Oaoa Ha’apiti is a true hidden gem.

Located in Ha’apiti, these exclusive bungalows strike the perfect balance between traditional Polynesian style and modern conveniences, with some suites including fully equipped kitchens and Smart TVs, perfect if you’re planning a longer stay!

The big highlight here, though, is the private beach area. It’s calm and never crowded, and the fact that you can literally step out of your door and have your feet in the sand is hard to beat.

Rates typically start from around $430 USD per night, and availability can be limited due to the small number of bungalows, so it’s worth booking ahead if this spot catches your eye.

Moorea Sunset Beach – $$

For something a bit more affordable (but just as scenic and special), Moorea Sunset Beach is a great shout.

This particular cluster of bungalows is located on one of Ha’apiti’s most renowned beaches, each offering large terraces, outdoor lounge areas, and everything you need for a comfortable, self-catered stay in Moorea. This spot is also perfectly positioned for all the lagoon adventures, including local spots where you can swim with rays and sharks!

In terms of pricing, you can expect rates to begin at around $220 USD per night and range up to $440+ for the larger family bungalows.

Linareva Moorea Beach Resort – $$

If you’re a nature lover looking for a peaceful, low-key retreat, Linareva Moorea Beach Resort is easily one of the best budget-friendly options on the island. This small, family-run resort located in Ha’apiti offers traditional Tahitian bungalows set away from the larger resort areas, which is honestly such a breath of fresh air.

But the real highlight of this property is the free use of kayaks and bicycles, making it easy to explore both the lagoon and the surrounding area at your own pace. The private beach pontoon is also a perk, especially at sunset!

Rates typically range from around $125 to $369 USD per night, which is excellent value considering the location.

Moorea Golf Lodge – $$

For a quieter getaway with a personal touch, Moorea Golf Lodge is a great find. Located near the international golf course and Temae public beach, it offers a lovely mix of authentic Polynesian charm and a warm, intimate atmosphere that feels a lot more personal than the larger resorts.

The bungalows themselves are simple but well-designed, with spacious layouts and large sundecks that make it easy to relax outdoors. One of our favorite perks of this property is the direct, private access to the sea, perfect for a morning swim or a private sunset all to yourself!

You can expect rates to typically start from around $130 USD per night and can go up to $550+ USD for the premium beachfront options, depending on the season and availability.

If you want a peaceful, private stay on the north coast, Secret Spot Lagoon Dream in Papetoai Beach is a fantastic little place to stay in Papetoai Beach

It’s quiet and secluded, and you’ll also have private waterfront access with plenty of space to truly unwind. Another perk is the infinity pool overlooking the water, as well as the fully equipped kitchen, which is ideal for longer stays.

Prices usually start at around $145 USD and can go up to $300 USD per night, making it an excellent value for the location and level of privacy. But make sure to book early, as this is a bit of a local “secret” and availability can be limited.

AIRALO e-SIM Up To 15% Off With Code “DTRAVEL15”

What’s an eSIM?

An eSIM is a digital version of a SIM card. Instead of buying a little plastic chip and swapping it into your phone, you just download it. It connects your phone to a local network in whatever country you’re visiting — no stores, no waiting, and no fiddling with tiny cards.

In simple terms, it’s the easiest way to get data and stay connected while traveling.

We’ve tested a bunch of eSIMs over the years, and after a few frustrating experiences, we’ve found our favorite — Airalo. It’s fast, reliable, and incredibly easy to use. You can set it up in minutes (even my mom managed it solo on her first try!), and the prices are some of the best out there.
